Hi
This is a superb site with so many beautiful
examples!
Attached is a picture of my dad's Opel
Caravan P1 1500 which he bought new in 1958 from General Motors Bulawayo,
Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).
We had her for 17 years! and used her to
travel all over the then Rhodesia and numerous trips to Durban South Africa,
and Beira in Mozambique.
She was a "friend" and only let us down once
when the timing gears synchros on the 3 speed box failed. I would give
anything to get her back and shipped to England where I am now to restore. She
was originally in the two tone colours of blue and white but my dad had her
resprayed in 1968 to an 'ice' blue colour with a white roof. I can never
forget cranking the clock under the dash to set the time lol. The starter
motor had a characteristic chant when we started her up too!
Those were the days in the African sun....
These are the only real pictures I've got
sadly but I can still remember the registration number which was B38232 B
stands for Bulawayo!
They were taken at Wankie Game Reserve
Rhodesia now Hwange Zimbabwe
The black and white photo with the thatched
roof hut was taken at Victoria Falls Rest Camp 1968.
In South Africa they are extremely
rare, almost all have been scrapped, but I'm sure there are still a few in
Zimbabwe that are salvageable. I want to go out there soon and see if I can find
any.
Paul
